Arguably one of the most important discoveries made regarding the historical and cultural study of ancient Egypt is the translation of the writing form known as hieroglyphics. This language, lost for thousands of years, formed a tantalizing challenge to a young Jean Franà §ois who committed his life to its translation. Scholars such as Sylvestre de Sacy had attempted to translate the Rosetta Stone before Champollion, but after painstaking and unfruitful work, they abandoned it (Giblin 32). Champollion’s breakthrough with hieroglyphics on the Rosetta Stone opened up new possibilities to study and understand ancient Egypt like never before, and modern Egyptology was born. It seemed that the other symbols represented things, not letters. A few others continued after him with the same idea of a solely alphabetical system, but they all came to the same dead end and were not able to make any progress. One of the first scholars to make any real headway on the translation was Thomas Young, a British polymath (Silet 1). Being a polymath and not understanding any of the language to begin with, Young meticulously inspected the stone, looking for recurring patterns and recording the number of times each symbol was repeated (Meyerson 123). Young knew that Ptolemys were Greek, so he assumed that the name â€Å"Ptolemaios,† spelled in the Greek style, would appear spelled the same way in the hieroglyphic section. Indeed he did find several times the cartouche containing what he believed to spell â€Å"Ptolemaios† (Giblet 40). With this level of unemployment and poor living standard, it is expedient that failure is inevitable. 3. Ever-increasing cost of living: This is the most painful sign that is eating every citizen of this country. Even when this was almost unbearable, the cost of living in the country has tripled since the removal of the subsidy on fuel products by the present administration. Also, the difference between the haves and the have-nots have also widened very bigger and wider. And what would be the result of such leadership? Failure! 3. Ethnic/Religious Disturbances: This is mainly in vogue especially States in the Middle Belt and the northern parts of the country; where the ceaseless and gruesome murdering of innocent Nigerians in the name of religious affiliation has remain unabated. Although, our leaders are playing politics with this situation at the moment, but if the lives of the citizens who voted for you to be in office is been used in playing politics, what else should we expect? At the moment, the economic life of the many states like Borno, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina and even Plateau is in shamble as many resourceful people has left the states as a result of the incessant bombings and murdering of innocent lives. While these people are moving out, none is willing to move in; a good sign of a failing nation because our leaders are not even doing anything tangible to stop the menace. Political Factors/Signs 4. Corruption: According to a recent report by Gallup. com, an online polling centre for world statistics, Nigeria is the second most corrupt nation in the world. With this high level of corruption, it is expected that a time will come when the populace will not be able to tolerate this anymore and a drastic revolution will be inevitable. 5. Politics of Ethnicity: This is one of the worst signal we have in the country today. This is due to the various numbers of ethnic groups which are believed to be running in the thousands. However, with each ethnic group always fighting to gain something for its own immediate ethnic constituency, the interest of the nation is being threatened. For example, a Yoruba man will fight to site a project in his district, even when the project will not be economically beneficial to the nation if it is sited in that region. Remember the sitting of a refinery in Kano, Northern part of the country, where crude oil is not drilled or exploited. In this context, the cost of transporting the crude from the Niger Delta region where the crude are drilled to this part of the country cost a lot of money and that is not in the interest of the nation. Unreliable Judicial System: That the judiciary in Nigeria acts not independently for justice of the oppressed, but on behalf of the powers-that-be is evidence of corruption: justice has been â€Å"bought,† in the first place, by those in power. One of the biggest challenges a person faces today is therefore to show where in Nigeria corruption is the exception, where it is prosecut ed to the fullest extent of the law, where the â€Å"small person†, the David of the Nigerian village, can get justice against the â€Å"big person† with political and financial influence, the Goliath of the city. The opposite, the victimization of the small person, is evident everywhere, to people with eyes to see. The reader of this text can testify to this fact, if he is patriotic enough to admit the worst. 7. Unreliable Electoral System: It is believed that Nigeria is still young in her democracy. However, with the way the electoral system is been run now, a great revolution may break out that can eventually lead to the disintegration of the entity known as Nigerian and bring in something else if the right steps are not taken to remedy the situation. The most painful part of this is that our leaders play politics with every important reform that would have taken the country to its zenith in the community of nations. Lack of full separation of power: Vesting too much ower in Executive system of government: concentrated governmental powers de facto in the executive branch of government can be a sure recipe for a failing State. Democratic experiments the world over have confirmed beyond doubt that when this happens, disaster with regard to just governance is not far away. The executive, legislative and judicial arms of the State should be kept separate because, if they are collapsed together, as they tend to be in Africa especially Nigeria, democracy is inevitably strangled, civil oppression and strife reign, and the State as a viable reality disintegrates. Reckless Law Enforcement Agencies: The police and army are the instruments of government normally charged with the responsibility to keep law and order and peace in the case of the former, and to defend the nation from external threats in the case of the latter. They should work closely with the judicial, the executive and the legislative arms of the State. In many parts of Nigeria, however, they have been cited to be rife with corruption and cruelty. Police officers asking openly for bribes are a routine thing in police offices and on the streets of Nigeria for sure. Even if it is open to question or interpretation, the accusation that more people meet a violent end in Nigeria at the hands of an incompetent, ruthless and trigger-happy police force, acting under various dubious pretexts, than, for example, in road accidents, is alone a matter of concern. Conclusion Similar symptoms highlighted above can continuously be analysed, as there are many more signs threatening our unity as a nation. The failure of the government to tackle some serious national issues like power, true federalism, free and fair electoral system, job creation, insecurity, buoyant and stable financial systems, etc has continuously been a great threat to our national integration and unity as one nation. For instance, after so many innocent killings in the North, as a result of the incessant bombings brought by the renowned Boko Haram religion sect, other parts of the country are now losing confidence in the ability of the present administration to tackle or contain these mindless killings. Though the government keep paying lip service to this menace, the citizenry are yet to understand if the unrest, which postdated the declaration of the incumbent President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the April 2011 General Elections, was prompted by political gladiators, or if the sect are clearly enemies of the Christians. Apart from the daily rise in crime, occasioned by the inability of the government to create jobs, neither can it empower the citizens. Should this continue, our power of unity will be greatly diminished as a result of which many people will grow frustrated and nobody needs to mention how such a society will fare if allowed to deteriorate to that level. There are many discoveries that are extremely important to the advancement of microbiology currently today. Micro-organisms cannot be seen with the naked eye their discovery was linked to the production of the microscope. The first person to see micro -organisms was a microscope maker Antoni van Leeuwenhoek in 1964. (Madigan et al 2003) Centuries after that discovery, a man called Edward Jenner discovered vaccination. He achieved this by eliminating small pox back in the eighteen century. In the eighteenth century, this disease was a fatal disease that accounted for 10% of deaths. That with the most part of the disease effecting young children and the killed 20-50% of those that was effected. And those that survived was led to blindness with the small poxs. (Smith 2011) I believe this is the most important discovery in microbiology to date, and this is what I am going to be writing about in my essay. Edward Jenner was a scientist who invented the small pox vaccination back in 1798. He discovered that by using a material from cow pox this would prevent many people from getting infected with small pox. This man started the science of immunology (Smith 2011). Pox viruses are the most complex and largest viruses and are not able to metabolize on their own. By the achievement of Edward Jenner, the application of this vaccine, has eradicated in the wild and is the first disease to be eliminate in this way. (Madigan et al 2003) Edward Jenner grew up in the countryside and this is where he achieved his early studies of smallpox and first inoculation. This is where he immunized the power of the cow pox. He collected any information form the milk maids about the disease, and then observed the milk maids for 10 years and then brought about his own experiment by inoculating a young boy. This young boy never had small pox and Jenner inoculated him with cow pox. The infected young man became ill, but after a few days made a full recovery with no side effects (Mc Nally 2001). This young boy became resistant to this disease because he was exposed to the disease, this is called passive immunity. Passive immunity occurred here because the young boy was exposed to the antigen which was the small pox. Edward Jenner achieved this when he injected the young boy with the material of the antigen. The young boy that Jenner injected acquired the infection and became immune to the disease. When the disease was introduced into the body the immune cells produced a large quantity of the antigen specific immune effector molecules that caused the immunity. The herd effect had an major impact on the termination of the small pox disease, the uptake of large amount of vaccines into different amounts of people caused the vaccine to become eradicated. Edward Jenner is said to be the father of immunity, and he achieved this by preventing deaths during the seventeen century. He was a pioneer to many other scientists and demonstrated that his inoculations saved many humans lives. Many years after this a second vaccine was discovered by a scientist called Louis Pasteur wanted to portray the same idea as Edward Jenner only Louis Pasteur did not want to save the lives of humans but the lives of animals. Louis Pasteur developed a vaccine against chicken cholera a disease that was terminating chickens caused by the bacteria Pasteurella multocida. This concept of using an attenuated organism for a vaccine happened by accident in the lab of Pasteur and his fellow scientists. When he inoculated the chickens with the bacteria they became ill and when he injected them accordingly days after this they didnt become ill. (WU X et al 2011). This showed that there was 75% of the infected diseases were zoonotic and this showed there was a vaccine ag ainst rabies a disease which was infecting both humans and animals. Initially Pasteur injected a series of increasingly viral solutions, that contained infected spinal cord from rabbit in suspect animal, mainly dogs that he used for his purpose. (Baer et al 2007). During Pasteur s experiment he increased the volume of rabies which meant that there was an increase in the death of his patients. Improvements of this experiment in 1911 by another scientist called Sir David Semple. He produced a vaccine that was produced by sheep brain tissue that was activated a substance that could inactivate all the virus in the vaccine. In 1955 an American scientist introduced another improvement in the vaccine. He took brain tissue from suckling mice. He completed this as he wanted to eliminate the neurological sides effects of the disease that was concerned with the myelin in the brain tissue of adult mice. (Schneider t al 1994). The amount of myelin was greatly reduced but there still was side eff ects that was occurring. This was the way in which the discovery of the vaccines became as essential need for the protection of both humans and animals. In the past centuries, we have seen a vast amount of vaccines that have been produced. Ranging from chicken poxes to hepatitis. In addition, there are vaccines being developed today which have a dramatic effect in developing countries such as malaria and meningococcal vaccines. (Wilby et al 2012) (Kristiansen et al 2013). In these developing countries there as a higher rate of disease which causes the population to experience a greater loss of human lives. These vaccines have been proven successful because of the changes in technology which has saved millions of lives. The benefits of successful vaccinations are very clear, not only direct protection but also has indirect effects on the unvaccinated individuals in the case of animals in groups or herds. The indirect protection of the unvaccinated person is when the injected suspect immunity prevents the circulation of the infectious disease into the populations. (Kim et al 2011) The death rate of not just humans but animals would have been dramatically increased and this would have a huge effect on the environment that we live in today. This is an important discovery in microbiology because this cured many diseases that not only affected human health but affected animal health. Tobacco is detrimental to people’s health and if there were more restrictions on the exposure of tobacco in the media, it would reduce tobacco use. Movies that depict tobacco should be rated R in order to prevent teens from the exposure of tobacco. R rated movies show violence, inappropriate language and sexual situations, circumstances that teens should not be allowed to see. The rating system went into effect in order to prevent kids from seeing inappropriate behaviors, since tobacco is also an inappropriate behavior, it should also be categorized in the R rated section of movies. Dangers of tobacco are well documented and researched. Researchers have spent billions of money on research regarding the risks of smoking long term and even the risks associated with second hand smoke. Time and money has gone into the research, and it is time that this research is used in a beneficial way to help the youth stay away from harmful behavior. The rating system went in effect on November 1, 1968. It got started after people complained about inappropriate language in movies that they did not want their children exposed to. In April 1968, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutional power of states to prevent the exposure of children to films that could not be denied to adults. It took around six months to decide how the movies would be rated before the rating system went into effect. Almost half a year was spent in order to move towards a system that would satisfy both children and adults. The purpose of movie ratings is not to critically mark the movies as poor quality movies, which is a critic’s trade, but in order to offer parents some advance information so that they can decide what they want their children exposed to. The movies are rated by a Rating Board which consists of 8-12 adults who are qualified based on their maturity level and their ability to place themselves in the role of a parent. There are fiv e categories that the movies are divided in: G, PG, PG13, R and NC17. A G rated film contains no nudity, no drugs, no sex scenes, etc. and is appropriate for all children. PG rating may contain some material that is inappropriate for children, so the Rating Board would advise the parents to view this film prior to letting their children watch it. A movie that is rated PG13 is strongly cautioned by the Rating Board to have the parents view the film, the material that is depicted in a PG13 film may be inappropriate for children under the age of thirteen.

It still needs funding, authority, better strategy for protecting American soil, personnel, better screening at airports for passengers and employees, and better technology to find weapons such as explosives. Improved intelligence capabilities are probably the most important. Border security issues were the founding fathers main focus when he was with the agency and I am in agreement. Securing our countries boarders on a daily basis is the Homeland security’s main concern. The military that has done that job up until now but with the world being global we need to separate the two and give each their own set of ground rules to operate at an optimum level. The merging of immigration and customs enforcement can only help in making this department function at a level the American public can be proud of with the goals of this office being completed (Magleby, O’Brien, Light, Peltason, Cronin, 2006). Even with all its imperfections I still believe that it is a needed department in our government. A somewhat more rigid department to handle military type action on homeland soil was needed and was realized on 9/11. We had been living in a glass house and it was just a matter of time. After the disaster of Katrina in 2005 it was more obvious that this newly formed department would need some redesign in its structure. But I think with having Homeland Security it will help to build a better military. This would allow more forces to be deployed outside our borders when needed. As the passage opens, Gulliver considers his situation and decides â€Å"to deliver [himself] to the first Savages [he] should meet; and purchase [his] life from them by some Bracelets, Glass Rings and other Toys, which Sailors usually provide themselves with in those Voyages.† Despite all his previous voyages in which Gulliver encountered people who were not at all savage (and possibly more civilized than him), he automatically assumes again that people in territories outside of Europe will be inherently savage. Not only does he underestimate their level of civilization, but he then proceeds to assume that the Native people will be intellectually inferior when he believes he can buy his life with what he himself refers to as â€Å"Toys.† Gulliver’s belief, however, is not completely grounded in arrogance because imperialistic powers did trade cheap jewelry with the Native Americans for furs or even land. In his novel, Swift does not use the Yahoos to show the evil of man but rather, to show the potential for evil that man has. Gulliver, however, takes his notions of judgment, and presupposes his intellectual superiority which feels he confirms based on the Yahoos’ lack of language and their not-so-warmhearted welcome. As he gradually begins to believe that all humans are at the Yahoo level, however, his Anglocentric pride fades. Thus, this passage is effectively the last time we really see Gulliver act on his presupposed English notions.

Technologies in the Classroom essays

Technologies in the Classroom essays I use technology in my pre-K classroom at this time. I use computers, video, recorders, videos, a camera, and the Internet. I use the computers to show them how they can write words on the computer, such as their names and words from the letter of the week. We also have educational games, like Jump Start Phonics, Spanish, and a math game. We also have other non-educational games for the children to play as well, such as Putt-Putt, Winnie the Pooh, and Castle. In these programs there are useful activities, such as getting from point A to point B through a maze, a Simon type game where you have to remember what order the colors flashed. I also use a recorder in my listening center. The children listen to books on tape and we also use it to record them retelling a story we have been talking about with our curriculum. I use videos to show educational videos when our curriculum calls for maybe a unit on sea animals. I think videos are over used in the classroom. I have seen som e teachers use them for entertainment purposes not educational purposes. Children love to have their pictures taken and I do a lot of this in my classroom. I also use it outside the classroom to show them about places I have visited and things I have seen, such as a windmill. Not many children have seen one much less know what one is. I also use the Internet a lot in my classroom to look up things to go with my curriculum, such as different types of animals to show the children and also for information on the animals. I use it also to look up different lesson plans or activities for my children. The Internet is the most powerful tool I have used so far, it helps me out a lot in my classroom. The children love to see different types of animals, insects, the solar system, and people on the net. ...
